TENNESSEE NUTRITION & CONSUMER EDUCATION PROGRAM (TNCEP)
Contact: Belinda Riddle
Through a multi-million dollar grant funded every year since 1992 by the United States Department of Agriculture, UT Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agents have developed and presented life-span nutrition and consumer education programs to food stamp eligible families. The goal of TNCEP is to help these families reduce the risk of poor nutrition and to effectively use Food Stamps and related resources as they move toward self-sufficiency.
Currently, under the leadership of the Coffee County TNCEP Coalition, Early Nutrition and Food Safety Education in-service training opportunities have been provided for special education, pre-school and Kindergarten teachers in schools with at least 50% of students on free or reduced lunch program.
Through classroom and day camp educational settings, hands-on learning experiences have taught children healthy eating choices. These children in-turn are influencing food choices made at home. Activities such as the "Food Groupie''''s" and Glo-Germs" help children learn about food groups, the benefits of eating a variety of foods and trying new foods, making healthy snack choices, and the importance of food safety and handwashing practices.
